Lock Stock & Barrel Wines

Many vineyards supplying our winery are in areas that were a focus of the gold rush of the mid to late 19th century and thus the inspiration for the name ‘Poppet Head’. The poppet head was a tower-like lifting structure built over the top of a mine shaft, enabling miners to get the quartz and rock out of the mine to the surface.

Poppet Head Chardonnay is predominantly sourced from premium Victorian wine regions including: Macedon Ranges, Yarra Valley and The Strathbogie Ranges. John Ellis is no stranger to cool climate Chardonnay making. During his time at Tisdall winery in the late 70’s, early 80’s he had the largest planting of cool climate Chardonnay in Australia. That vineyard was the Mount Helen vineyard in The Strathbogie Ranges.

Our strategy with this premium fruit is to mature it in new French oak for 12 months.

Tasting Notes

Structure: acidity, flavour and oak – all in balance, indicates that this wine will cellar well.

Colour: juicy melon flavours and restrained oak character.

Match with, well, just about anything. A great all-rounder this Chardonnay, try it as an aperitif, with a creamy pasta, or fish.
